Yesterday we were walking our dog at a private park in Cumberland, RI named The Monastery. This park offers excellent walking trails. There are signs all over the place, clearly stating that dogs must be leashed. The town of Cumberland does, in fact have a leash law. As we walked along with our leashed dog we came across two women walking two unleashed and totally uncontrolled dogs - by totally I mean to say that the dogs did not respond to the owner's commands. Our dog is small and often afraid of larger dogs, even more so when there's more than one and they are running wild. As these two dogs came running toward us we had no idea of their temperament. I called out from about 100' away to the apparent owners, asking if they would call their dogs. Their efforts to do so did nothing whatsoever. As the dogs came within arms length I pushed them away - gently - and told them to go away. Our dog was whimpering and upset. As the owners approached they made no effort whatsoever to leash or restrain either dog, or apologize. As a result of their non-interest in any level of concern for any other person or animal, I had to raise a leg to block one of the dogs from coming near. One of the owners stated "don't kick my dog". Believe me, if I wanted to kick the dog I would not have hesitated. In the past I have experienced the joy of a dog running directly through their silly electric fence, in order to get to my dogs. I kicked that stupid shit as if I was kicking its owner's teeth in. Proud? No, not in the least. I regret and resent having to do it. But, that regret dissipated more than a little when the owner told me there was "no way my dog could have gotten into the street, there's an electric fence". Stupidity. Talk to any dog office in any town, anywhere and ask how many times this happens. But I digress... let's get back on track.
Now, despite recent admissions, I am usually fairly even-tempered. However, I have a great and immediate dislike of anyone not willing to take personal responsibility for their actions or inaction. Luckily for me I have a psychology background and a great understanding of people due to many years of global travel. My theory is that if you meet enough people, you understand any personality. In this case I immediately had the more verbal owner nailed - in great need of anger management. So, I played into that by responding to her request to "not kick her dog" with a very clear "FUCK YOU LADY". If you show zero respect to me, my family and yes, my dog, then less than zero respect will be returned. As I exclaimed my message of mental manipulation, my wife and I continued to walk without turning around. This inflamed the uncontrolled owner of at least one uncontrolled dog so, so much - she became incensed. Mission accomplished.
As we continued our walk, we heard:
- "well, FUCK YOU", and then 30 seconds later
- "I hope next time he takes a fuckin' chunk out of you", and then 30 seconds after that, as they were roughly 500' behind us came a very clear, top-of-the-lungs: "ASSHOLE!!!"
My smile could not have been wider. I got what I wanted, and I hope she got what she deserved. Karma.
As we continued on our walk I said to my wife that,"they ruined our walk, so I ruined their entire day". Given the level of anger evoked one must assume that the discussion of that "asshole at the park" continued and may have been shared with others.
In closing: if you are a stupid dog owner, please try not to be. As you might read in the article referenced below, there are a number of reasons why someone might not want your dog running freely. If you do want your dog to run anywhere over great distance, I suggest you purchase 40 acres of land and create a private dog park. If you do that, you will absolutely have my respect, and I might even donate to keep your park open for other, hopefully formerly stupid dog owners to enjoy.
Here's a very good reference for any idiot who thinks that, because "their dog is just wonderful and so friendly", it means that a) everybody know that on sight, and b) nobody will be bothered, or scared or just plain pissed off:
Oh, one last thing: peppers spray is legal in Rhode Island.
